Border Strikers 0 - 1 Hwange
PREMIERSHIP newboys Border Strikers slumped to their sixth defeat on the trot when they succumbed to a second half strike by Hwange's Pervington Zimunya in a Castle Lager Premiership tie at Maglas yesterday.
Zimunya's 53rd minute strike made the difference after he had been introduced as a substitute for injured veteran forward Gilbert Zulu midway through the opening half.
Gift Mbwete won possession and sent a defence-splitting pass into the Border Strikers' area. Zimunya took advantage of his pace and met the ball with his right foot, releasing a screamer that goalkeeper Talent Sande could not save.
It was the first victory for Hwange away from home since the beginning of the season. Border Strikers, who have lost all their matches to date, only had one shot on target. The visitors' goalkeeper Future Sibanda was only tested once in the 66th minute when he dived to his right to deny Munyaradzi Chirape's header in the 72nd minute.
Young Warriors midfielder Livingstone Genti and Tambwe Kalunga were the only players who appeared ready to make an impression while the rest were content with knocking the ball around.
Border Strikers' coach Saul Chaminuka was once again left wondering what his men need to get a victory. "We had no firepower. The Hwange goalkeeper was only tested once. We are not convincing but I am working on it.
"I hope one day we will score goals and win. We are one team that has conceded the lowest number of goals and that shows we are doing something. "I am not going to walk away but I am going to work hard and correct the major problem and that is scoring," said Chaminuka.
Hwange coach Mebelo Njekwa was happy with his team's showing. "We did not play our normal game as we chose to pump the long balls forward as we did not want them to play their passing game. "I am happy that we managed to get maximum points for the first time away from home and I am happy with the performance of my boys," said Njekwa.
