THE Ministry of Sport and Recreation has raised concern over the state of women football amid fears that the Zifa secretariat failed to submit the 35 provisional list of the Mighty Warriors' Olympic squad by the June 1 deadline.
In a statement, the ministry said it has since directed the Sports and Recreation Commission to engage Zifa over the matter.
"We wish to highlight the unstable women's football leadership structure, the absence of a constitutional framework to govern women's football," said the ministry in the statement released yesterday.
The Ministry also said the absence of an operational women's football league at national, provincial and district levels as well as poor and unstructured preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was of major concern.
The statement by the ministry comes at a time when there are growing fears that the national association failed to meet the June 1 deadline of submitting the Mighty Warriors' Olympic squad although Mighty Warriors' coach Shadreck Mlauzi said they submitted their provisional list to the association.
Acting Zifa chief executive officer Joseph Mamutse yesterday could neither confirm nor deny that names were forwarded to Fifa.
"I can't say for certain (that names were submitted) but let me refer you to our technical director (acting) Mike Ngore," said Mamutse.
Ngore was not answering his mobile phone for the better part of the day yesterday. The final list of 18 players plus four alternate or additional players must be submitted by July 14.
According to competition rules, players will be allowed to be replaced from July 18, 2016 until 24 hours prior to the start of the tournament — the replacement of an injured athlete can be done with any player from the Fifa provisional list of 35 players, or with one of the four additional players.
After the start of the competition, the replacement of injured athlete will only be possible with one of the four alternate athletes.
Key dates:
1 June 2016 Provisional list (35 players)
4 July 2016 Final list (18 players plus four alternate or additional)
