Border Strikers hand Chunga unlikely defeat

CASTLE Lager Premiership whipping boys Border Strikers picked their second set of maximum points after they edged Harare City at Dulivhadzimu Stadium yesterday.
Before the success over Harare City, they had won over Tsholotsho on Africa Day. They remain at the bottom of the league table with six points from their two victories from 12 outings.
Yesterday's win was also interim coach Never Malunga's first game in charge after the sacking of Saul Chaminuka last week.
The match was played before a capacity crowd under the watchful eye of anti-riot police following disturbances that rocked the border town on Friday when hoodlums barricaded roads with stones, looted shops and burnt state property protesting the introduction of new import restrictions.
Border Strikers took the lead in the 15th minute through striker William Nyoni's header from a Hugh Chikosha cross.
Nyoni was on the score sheet in their maiden home game against Chapungu when they lost 1-2.
Harare City tried hard to level matters through veteran striker Martini Vengesai, but Border Strikers' captain and defender Mike Variso stood firm.
The visitors came back firing in the second half, but they found no way past Border Strikers goalkeeper Talent Sunday.
Harare City coach Moses Chunga said his team was too complacent and failed to stick to their game plan.
"We played a lot of long balls and that cost us a lot. We're good when we build up from the back. We played into Border Strikers' game and will have to make some hard decisions going forward," said Chunga.
Malunga said his team had played according to instructions.
"This is the beginning of good things to come and we're motivated. The plan is to continue fighting for more points and goals whether home or away," he said.
Club secretary Rodlet Chigwinya said they were vindicated for sacking Chaminuka.
"This is good for the team. We want someone that will give us results. We thank our fans for sticking with us," he said.
