Govt to digitalise the whole of Zimbabwe by 2015

THE Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) intends to digitalise the whole of Zimbabwe by 2015, Minister Nelson Chamisa has revealed.
In an interview, Minister Chamisa said his ministry's vision was to make Zimbabwe an information society for it to compete on the global standards.
"People from all walks of life should be exposed and have access to information technology for the country to develop.
"It's high time all businesses in the country adopt the use of technology to make sure that the economy recovers and grows back to its status.
"This is the only way we can survive competition and mass production from countries like China and many others," he said.
He said through the various awareness programmes, ICT was spreading even to the marginalised areas of Zimbabwe.
"We have been developing infrastructure in rural areas as well as setting base stations in remote areas so that every Zimbabwean can benefit from the use of technology.
"Zimbabwe has to be an information centre which is the reason why the ministry of ICTs is working tirelessly to make local people enjoy the benefits that come with technology," Minister Chamisa said.
He said in an effort to improve technology in the country, his ministry managed to see through the removal of duty on ICT products for the benefit of the country's growth.
The Minister said the Government has been supporting them massively and people as well.
"For the past year we did quite well in infrastructural developments as we have managed to lay fibre optic cables that link us to the rest of the world through South Africa, Zambia and Botswana to mention a few.
"Also the networking of most rural areas was an achievement as we moved towards the empowerment of marginalised areas by making sure that they are also part of the world which has become a global village," he said.
He said he was trying to do away with old ways of doing things through the introduction of E-learning, E-Government and E-Health.
"We have been supporting education by networking educational institutions even those in rural areas as we try to take the chalkboard era and throw it into the dustbins.
"E-Business is already functioning as many people are now doing business online. We are on the move to promote E-Governance whereby we introduce computerisation to parliamentarians also," Minister Chamisa said.
He said the ICT sector would keep on developing to help Zimbabwe recover economically.
"ICT is the backbone of any developing country so we will make sure that Zimbabweans in all spheres of life are exposed to the digital world so that our country grows," he said.
