Software giant Microsoft has warned of a loophole in Internet Explorer which could affect around 900 million users globally.
The company said it will issue a patch for the problem.
The loophole is said to be severe enough to allow hackers to access private information or even hijack computers.
The flaw resides in Windows itself but affects the functioning of Internet Explorer.
Microsoft spokeswoman Angela Gunn said in a statement that the flaw meant users could find themselves clicking on malicious links.
She said : "When the user clicked that link, the malicious script would run on the user's computer for the rest of the current Internet Explorer session".
The company has put a patch on its site users could download to at least block attempts to exploit the flaw.
