Hacker group Anonymous has threatened to shut down Facebook on November 5th, they say the social networking site is selling information to government agencies and that privacy settings are a fallacy.

"Support the cause and kill Facebook for your own privacy... Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world," according to a YouTube video, allegedly posted by Anonymous.

The two-minute long video featured a disguised voice railing against Facebook and its lack of privacy.

The video mentioned that some of the security firms the social networking site is allegedly selling information to are working for 'authoritarian governments' and specifically mentions both Egypt and Syria.

The Anonymous video also said that privacy settings on Facebook are a myth and any information you put in the site can never be deleted.

"Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook, regardless of your privacy settings and deleting your account. Deleting your account is impossible. Even if you delete your account your information stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time," said the video. "Facebook knows more about you than your family."

Anonymous said that Facebook is the antithesis of the anti-sec cause and that they will take down the site on Guy Fawkes night on 5th November.

"Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history, November 5th 2011," said the video.

Anonymous' "identity" is strongly inspired by the comic book and film V for Vendetta and members often wear the Guy Fawkes masks popularised by the film and comic book in public.

The Anonymous Hackers group has allegedly hacked a number of websites within the past 18 months, chief among them being the Visa and Mastercard Credit card websites, Paypal Website as well as the Harvard University Website
