ECONET Solar announced plans to formally introduce a new energy solution that aims to avert power shortages in Zimbabwe.

Dubbed the Home Power Station, the solution will be launched in the country in February.

In an exclusive interview with CAJ News in Cape Town on Tuesday, Econet Solar General Manager for Services - Technical, Mr Brighton Muzondo, said the innovation was cheaper, user-friendly, efficient and readily available to the poorest people in both the urban areas and countryside.

A pilot project is ongoing in the country Harare and would soon be extended to - Bulawayo, then Chinhoyi, Gwanda, Gweru, Masvingo and Mutare among other centres.

"There is power shortage in Zimbabwe. Instead of people using candles, they will now use LED lights and candles, which is cheaper, brighter and environmentally friendly," said Mr Muzondo.

"When we started this innovation, our main target was rural based people, but due to severe power shortage in the country, we have also seen majority of urban dwellers in Harare consuming the product," added Mr Muzondo.

He said Econet Solar, founded by Econet Group two years ago, would do an in-store activation of the Home Power Station in order to communicate the unit via a patent data controller. He said at the moment Econet was not selling the unit, but was leasing it out at 30 cents per day or $90 per month.
