Lecturers at the country's state universities have vowed to continue with strike action, even after government paid them their salaries for January today.

The lecturers and non teaching staff said they would only return to class after the government paid them their bonuses as well. They said they were the only civil servants who were not paid bonuses.

Zimbabwe State Universities Union of Academics (ZISUUA) national president, Alois Muzvuwe said they stood by the agreement they made on Tuesday, not to resume lecturers until both their salaries and bonuses had been paid.

He said government had not bothered to update lecturers on the way forward. Lecturers who spoke to Bulawayo24 News said they would not return to work until government paid them their dues.

"We borrowed heavily expecting to pay back using our annual bonuses. Government has been shifting the date for payment and we are no longer sure we will get the money. We were last promised 6 February as the debt for getting our bonuses, now it has passed and government is mum," said the lecturer who declined to be named.

At a meeting at the National University of Science and technology on Tuesday, lecturers demanded a meeting with President Mugabe, who is the chancellor of all state universities.

They said in future they would not go to work if their salaries were delayed. They also demanded a set date for payment of their salaries. Ends.
