VANCOUVER - SPOTLIGHT ZIMBABWE has since its launch in 2016 made shock waves on the website's reportage on Zimbabwe, with its founding editor, Itai Mushekwe, making history by accurately reporting on crucial political developments in the country, well ahead of some mainstream media outlets with mighty resources at their disposal.
Mushekwe who began his career in Zimbabwe over 10 years ago, has written for various prominent publications including leading newspapers in Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Russia.
The investigative political journalist among other key stories, accurately reported last year and late this year about President Emmerson Mnangagwa, then a vice president under former leader Robert Mugabe, that he would rise to power and finish off Mugabe's term before the 2018 elections. Mushekwe also correctly disclosed that Mugabe himself would step down as President of Zimbabwe, and presidential candidate of the ruling Zanu PF before the watershed plebiscite next year.
Our editor then released a series of many other exclusive reports, including the consensus among the country's military chiefs, for Mnangagwa to take over the presidency from Mugabe "come what may". Also the journalist wrote about then Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda, now a General being promoted to head the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) in July 2016. More importantly, Mushekwe has also written another exclusive on now retired ZDF boss, General Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga, rising to the post of vice president, also last year when the General was at risk of being fired by Mugabe for allegely meddling in politics.
"I'm always overwhelmed with questions about our sources, as we are almost always hitting the nail on the coffin with our stories," said Mushekwe from his base in Germany. "It's perhaps a sheaf of luck and very good contacts we have inside the government, opposition and business leadership of Zimbabwe. The competition is stiff, Zimbabwean journalists are versatile, because we all want the scoop. Spotlight Zimbabwe shall continue playing its part, in the smallest of ways as we eye into the future."
Mushekwe did not elaborate, about "the future", but long term plans are to launch a countrywide private daily in Zimbabwe, certain to give market players a good run for their money.
Below a cocktail of the aforementioned stories:
