BEIJING - China is indirectly objecting to France's arming of Libyan civilians under attack from government forces, saying the international community should work toward a peaceful end to Libya's conflict.
In response to a question about France's air-dropping of weapons to civilians fighting Moammar Gadhafi's forces, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters Thursday that countries should avoid actions that go beyond U.N. Security Council directives.
Hong says China wants a peaceful resolution to restore peace and stability in Libya as soon as possible.
China is critical of the NATO-led campaign to protect civilians rebelling against Gadhafi, saying Western countries are exceeding the U.N. authorization and actively taking sides in the conflict
