Motorists who are in a habit of ignoring traffic regulations should be prepared to pay more in fines next year.
Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa has proposed to hike a string on fines that include driving without windscreen wipers with effect from 1 January.
According to Chinamasa, the new fine structure will curb accidents.
"The current standard scale of fines was last reviewed in February 2009, when the country migrated to the use of multi-currencies.
"Whereas the fines are supposed to be deterrent, this, however, is not being achieved due to the low level of some of the fines.
"Most of the carnage that is witnessed on the country's roads are a result of human error arising from failure to observe road traffic regulations. This is exacerbated by non-deterrent fines".
"It is, therefore, proposed to increase the standard scale of fines of level
1 to 3, with effect from 1 January 2017".
According to a new fine structure, driving without windscreen wiper and head or side lights will attract $10 up from $5.
Fines for cutting corners when turning right and failure to signal when slowing down, stopping or turning would be pegged at $15 up from the current $10.
Drivers who are in a habit of proceeding against a red robot, overtaking over solid line and drive with non-functional foot brake will pay $30 up from $20.
