PROFESSOR Welshman Ncube's MDC party says it will only respect rights of gays and lesbians if those rights are enshrined in the new constitution.
Bulawayo province spokesperson, Edwin Ndlovu said recently the issue of how to treat gays and lesbians could only be decided after the outcome of the new constitution.
Ndlovu's comments come after the party was stung by what many call a horrendous revelation by one of the party's youths, Talent Bhekimpilo Nyathi that he was gay.
Nyathi disclosed his "status" through a post on social platform, Face book. "The issue of gays and lesbians is a cultural matter and as a party we went to the constitution making process and will stand by what people said there," Ndlovu said.
"To us, the subject matter (of gays and lesbians) it is not an issue (for now) and we have no problem with it," he said.
Ndlovu also disclosed his party would not take any disciplinary action on Nyathi following his disclosures.
The Ncube-led party has been lambasting the leader of the another formation of the MDC party led by Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai which came out and publicly supported gays and lesbians.
"We will not do anything to him. He has not done any act of misconduct and we have not received any report from anyone about such an act. He remains our member.
"Besides, the story you are referring to is wholly based on a face book wall post, which we cannot tell whether it was by the concerned member or someone purporting to be him," Ndlovu said.
