Zanu PF Matabeleland leaders seek relevance

With Zimbabwe bracing for possible elections in 2012 or 2013, Matabeleland is headed for interesting times with some Zanu PF veteran leaders seeking to restore relevance and gain political vote into parliament.
Notable names are the likes of national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo who last year made it known that he would be contesting for a seat at his rural Mangwe district.
It is believed that Vice President John Nkomo (pictured left) is also secretly campaigning for a seat in his rural Tsholotsho home.
The two have been regularly visiting their respective areas of interest in recent days with Moyo donating maize seed while Nkomo has embarked on an initiative to build a secondary school in Tsholotsho as well as making a number of donations.
The interest in contesting elections comes following President Robert Mugabe's directive last year that all senior party members should take part in the next elections in a bid to regain seats lost to Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC-T.
Moyo and Nkomo last contested in elections following their respective defeats in Mangwe and Pelandaba in 2000 to MDC-T candidates.
Afterwards the politicians have been surviving on the benevolence of Robert Mugabe who appointed them to a number of government positions.
Other senior party members likely to take part in the elections are Eunice Sandi Moyo, Sikhanyiso Duke Ndlovu, Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube who lost to MDC Vice President Thokozani Khuphe in the race for the Makokoba constituency seat in 2008 among others.
However, analysts have said it was too late for the old Zanu PF hawks to win the favour of the people for their no care attitude towards the plight of the people of the region.
