Zanu-PF called an urgent politburo meeting yesterday amid reports that President Robert Mugabe is in panic mode following factional fighting in Zanu-PF's provinces. Fights are raging on between rival factions from seven of the party's 10 provinces.

The meeting was later cancelled to accommodate Zambian President Michael Sata's visit, the NewsDay reported.

Party provincial godfathers are accusing each other of imposing candidates in the ongoing district elections. Senior party officials confirmed the factional clashes which they, however, described as nothing unusual and nothing more than what happened at the MDC-T congress last year.

Zanu-PF political commissar Webster Shamu and secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa claimed Zanu-PF would come out of the restructuring process stronger and healthier.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said the Politburo meeting would take place next week and the issue of provincial clashes would be tabled for discussion.

"The meeting is on next week and that's an issue that will be discussed, then we will act on the report after it has been tabled," Gumbo said.
