The chairman of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) faction led by Welshman Ncube, Goodrich Chimbaira says Zimbabwean voters should seriously consider electing a president who comes from the Ndebele ethnic group.
Chimbaira who is not known by the majority of his party supporters in the country was speaking at a rally in Bulawayo,s Stanley Square on Saturday attended by about 500 people. Addressing the crowd he said the Ndebele have been marginalised for too long by the Zanu (PF) government and now is the time for the country to rotate the presidency.
" There is nothing to hide here, Ndebeles in Zimbabwe have been marginalised for long and I think it's high time for you to stand up and lead. Look what happened in the United States of America, Barack Obama who comes from the minority black people is ruling that country, what can stop the minority people of Zimbabwe to provide a Ndebele President, " said Chimbaira.
He told the local people to stop being cry babies and claim their rightful place in Zimbabwe. He said his party leader Ncube was ready to lead the country if Zimbabweans voted him president in the next elections. Chimbaira said there are hardcore tribalists who label his MDC faction a Ndebele party because it is being led by Ncube. " No that's not true there are even more Shonas in this party than Ndebeles. "
Speaking at the same rally, Ncube said his party is not going to get involved in matters that affected the MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai this week saying it's their internal party issues.
"What goes around comes around, last time when we tried to seek help from our colleagues in MDC-T on the issue of Mutambara they gave us a cold shoulder saying it was an internal party issue. Now they also have serious problems and if they approach us we will tell them it's their party internal issue, " said Ncube.
