It was virtually a double misfortune for a 20-year-old woman from Kingsade Farm in Umguza who after being raped ran naked to a nearby house to seek help before the owners nearly thrashed her after they mistook her for a WITCH.
The incident occurred when the alleged rapist stalked the woman after she decided to use a bush path on her way from Kingdale to Cowdry Park in Bulawayo where she was visiting her husband.
The alleged sexual predator, Lazarus Nyoni (23) stalked the woman (name withheld) after he had reportedly failed to sexually abuse her while relieving herself at a bushy area near a bus stop. The woman had been waiting there for transport before she decided to walk.
Circumstances are that on 28 December at around 4pm, the woman was called by her husband instructing her to wait for him at the bus stop as he was coming to take her to Cowdry Park. It is reported that while at the bus stop, she went to a nearby bush to respond to the call of nature and while relieving herself, Nyoni approached the woman and assaulted her before forcibly dragging her for a distance. Nyoni reportedly attempted to rape his victim but was disturbed by some passersby.
It is alleged that at around 7pm, the woman's husband failed to turn up and the woman decided to walk. While on her way along the bushy path, Nyoni who was laying an ambush emerged from the bush and assaulted the woman with a stick all over her body forcing her to lie down. He is said to have stripped her naked and allegedly raped the married woman once.
The complainant who was naked managed to free herself and ran away to a nearby house to seek help. However, the unfortunate woman almost got a thorough beating as the owners of the house thought they had finally been visited by a stark naked witch. After narrating her ordeal to them, she was later given accommodation to put up for the night.
She went home the following day where she reported the matter to her husband who later accompanied her to file a rape charge against Nyoni at the police station.
For the offence, Nyoni has since appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Miss Marylene Mtshina. He was not formally charged and was remanded in custody to 21 January.
