A Zimbabwean woman suspected of dealing in mbanje has been denied bail after being caught with enough of the illegal weed to supply residents of Francistown and Selebi-Phikwe put together.

52-year-old Kesiwe Sibanda of Gwabalanda location in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe was not asked to plead to charges of cross border peddling in dagga worth thousands of pula, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing. She appeared in the Francistown magistrates' court before magistrate Mpho Molema.

Sibanda, who has two more related cases pending, has been remanded in custody to give the police enough time to conclude their investigations. Sibanda is jointly charged with four others, Sidney Sebunga, Thembelihle Sebunga, Obositse Lekgetho and Batswana Lekgetho, all of Area A in Francistown.

In successfully arguing against bail, Lapologang Moatshe prosecuting said that investigations into the matter were still at an early stage.

Sibanda has a similar case pending in the Selibe-Phikwe magistrates' court after she was found in possession of dagga weighing 60.2kilograms at Sese cordon gate on here way to the mining town.

The court heard that Sibanda also has a third case to answer after she was found in possession of 49.7kgs of mbanje at Mmandunyane village near Tonota in June 2012. For the current case she is charged with possession of three bags containing 'a greenish substance' suspected to be dagga.

"This is quite a substantial amount of dagga," said the investigating officer.

The court heard that the Sibanda is not employed and is believed to be surviving through trading in dagga.

She was remanded in custody after officers expressed fears that she would skip the country. She is expected back in court on 11 April for a mention.
