BULAWAYO residents are living in fear, following reports that police are yet to arrest the man who allegedly shot at a commuter omnibus driver in the city centre on Friday.
The unidentified man allegedly fired two shots at the kombi driver and fired two more as the driver fled in his vehicle.
The pair were last seen in a high speed car chase, moving towards Airport Road. The incident occurred along Fife Street near Cecil hotel at about 3pm. Residents yesterday said they were living in fear after the incident, which they described as shocking.
They called on anyone who may have information that may lead to the arrest of the man, to cooperate with the police.
The chairperson of the Bulawayo United Residents Association, Mr Winos Dube said the incident was unZimbabwean.
"It is very shocking to say the least. We have never seen such a thing. Having a gun fired in an open space. This is unZimbabwean. As residents we call on police to bring the issue to a close because we are now living in fear," said Mr Dube.
He challenged residents who may have information about the whereabouts of the man who did the shooting, to contact the police.
"This is our city and we should not treat the shooting as an isolated incident. We should all boldly make a statement to criminals that we will not tolerate foreign cultures of violence here. I urge residents who may know this man to contact the police. If we keep quiet about this one incident, more may follow. As residents, we should all say no to a culture of habouring criminals to make the city safe for our brothers, sisters, wives and children," said Mr Dube.
"Although I do not know the motive for the shooting, I strongly believe in dialogue as a way of solving problems. These people should have sought counseling instead of endangering the lives of residents by firing a gun in a public place."
Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association coordinator, Mr Roderick Fayayo said it was in residents' interests to work with the police to get the gunman arrested.
"The incident is very disturbing. If something can happen like that and the culprit is not arrested, there is no guarantee that he may not do it again. The next time, he may kill people. It is important for residents to come together and work with the police on this one," said Mr Fayayo.
Contacted for comment yesterday, Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Ntombizodwa Chiduwuro said she could not comment as she was waiting for official communication from Bulawayo CID.
However, police sources yesterday said the vehicle that was used by the gunman was recovered on Friday. They said the suspect was still at large and the kombi driver, who was shot at, was still to be located.
