MDC members want Welshman Ncube out
31 Jan 2014 at 07:39hrs | Views
Members of the Movement for Democratic Change led by Professor Welshman Ncube are on a massive behind the scenes lobby for the ousting of the professor from Presidency of the party.
Confirmed and reliable information coming from the party's Bulawayo Province is that several meetings have been held with "influential" people from around the provinces discussing plans to call for Ncube to step down from the party leadership. Ncube was elected unopposed as party president at the 2011 congress taking over from Arthur Mutambara who withdrew his name shortly before the elections at the congress.
In an exclusive statement made available to Bulawayo 24, the members claim that party members have lost confidence in Professor Ncube who has remained silent since the party's dismal performance in the harmonised elections last year. Members claim that Ncube's silence is worrying them making them feel that he might no longer be interested in leading the party.
"We feel like street kids with no parents as our leader has dumped us and decided to hide somewhere where we can't even phone him and talk to him." Claimed one of the members leading the "coup".
Asked how much work has been put into the plan, the members claim that "the job" is almost complete and almost all provinces have been consulted and a letter will be handed over to party Secretary General in Harare soon. Claims are that Bulawayo, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, Mutare, Harare and Midlands provinces have been consulted and agreed to back the call to rest Professor Ncube.
According to the members an urgent congress is being requested in the plan where a complete leadership renewal is being planned. The party's elective congress is due early 2016. What is surprising though is that the members are mention including some dismissed or resigned members as likely people to take over the leadership of the party. Top amongst the names mentioned as people likely to take over leadership of the beleagued party is former party Director of policy and research Qhubani Moyo who was the first top leader to quit the party after the election disaster. Moyo remains very favourable in the party especially amongst the youth and demands for his return to the party appear top on the agenda to replace Ncube.
The MDC and Professor Ncube have been quite since the July elections where the party garnered only 2% of the national vote. In the run up to the election the party was somehow the most vibrant and fastest growing of the three lead parties contesting the elections. A number of the party's top leaders have been deserting the party wantonly leaving the party extremely weakened with some sectors believing the party is bound for closure. In recent weeks the party closed all its provincial offices and has been disposing off assets which include motor vehicles and office equipment.
