Zanu-PF Bulawayo central district elections were called off today resulting is a serious exchange of words between warring factions.

Zanu PF Bulawayo secretary for administration Elifasi Mashaba reportedly called off the elections saying there were not enough people to form an electoral college.

However, party insiders accused Mashaba of protecting his ally Douglas Gadzira from defeat by fellow contestant Joe Chiyangwa.

"There were more than 150 people at Davies Hall and  according to the party constitution that was enough to hold an election," a party member said.

"However, Mashaba realised that Gadzira would lose the election as there were many of Chiyangwa's supporters and called off the elections resulting in chaotic scenes."

According to insiders, Mashaba was told by one party member that he belonged to a faction led by Justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mashaba threatened to sue the member for defamation.

Contacted for comment, Mashaba said he did not discuss party processes with the press.

"Its an internal party matter, we do not discuss internal processes  " he said.
