The trial of MDC-T deputy president Thokozani Khupe's chauffer and his accomplice, arrested in June this year after they allegedly assaulted Matabeleland North provincial chairperson's driver, before stealing cash and impounding the Isuzu truck he was driving, will kick off today at the Bulawayo Regional Court.
Witness Dube and MDC-T Bulawayo youth assembly's provincial secretary Kunashe Muchemwa are facing robbery and theft charges after they allegedly hijacked provincial chairperson Sengezo Tshabangu's driver, Zaccaria Nkomo, on May 25, this year.
The incident occurred as the fight, between the Morgan Tsvangirai and Tendai Biti-led factions, for property following a split within the party heightened.
Tshabangu reportedly belongs to the Biti-led faction.
On Wednesday, the duo appeared briefly before magistrate Gladmore Mushove at the Bulawayo Provincial Magistrates' Courts and was advised their trial would commence today (Thursday) at the Bulawayo Regional court.
Dube and Muchemwa are out of custody on bail.
In his application for bail in June this year, Dube who is also Khuphe's security aide, through his lawyer Tanaka Muganyi of Dube, Banda, Nzarayapenga and Partners, told the court he was acting as per instructions of the party president, Tsvangirai, when he committed the alleged offences.
He said an instruction was disseminated to all provincial secretaries on April 29, ordering them to take necessary steps to safeguard and protect the party's properties in their provinces, which included the vehicle in question.
