EX-ECONET Bulawayo accounts manager was yesterday slapped with a five year jail term after he was convicted of defrauding the company of airtime worth more than $90,000 in 2012.

Morgan Jange, 31, pleaded guilty to fraud and claimed he stole the money to raise cash for his mother's cancer treatment.

Bulawayo provincial Magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze sentenced him to five years in jail and suspended two years on condition that he restitutes Econet the $90,500 he stole and another year was suspended on condition of good behaviour.

"This court finds you guilty of fraud and thus you are sentenced to five years imprisonment. One year is suspended on condition of good behaviour and a further two years is suspended on condition that you pay back what you owe Econet," said Magistrate Msipa-Marondedze.

In mitigation, Jange told the court that his mother had cancer and he needed large sums of money for her treatment.

Prosecuting, Nkathazo Dlodlo said Jange committed the offence in 2012 after forging invoices.

He said on September 7, 2012, Jange received recharge cards worth $90, 500 to deliver to OK Entumbane but converted them to his own use.

Jange's duties included selling airtime to the company's clients and independent distributors.

Dlodlo said the fraud came to light last year in August after OK Entumbane realised that they were wrongly invoiced for airtime worth $90, 500.

Dlodlo said Jange was arrested with the assistance of Interpol as he was now living in South Africa.
