RETIRED Colonel Tshinga Dube yesterday won the ticket to represent Zanu-PF in the Makokoba constituency by-election after he trounced Shadreck Mukaro in a primary election.

Rtd Col Dube garnered 275 votes while Mukaro got 18 votes in one of the three primary elections held by the party in Bulawayo yesterday. In the 2013 elections, Rtd Col Dube lost to MDC-T's Gorden Moyo.

By-elections will be staged in five Bulawayo constituencies that were left vacant after 21 MDC-T MPs were recently fired from parliament.

The other primary elections were held in Luveve and Lobengula constituencies.

In Luveve, Ntandoyenkosi Mlilo beat Anna Moyo. Mlilo got 211 votes while Moyo recorded 165.

Returning officer, Politburo member Thokozile Mathuthu announced the results at the party's provincial headquarters last night. She said that there would be a re-run today in Lobengula constituency as one of the candidates Tariro Zhou was disqualified after the party realised that she had transferred her vote a day before the election.

"In Lobengula constituency we will not be counting the votes cast today as we disqualified one of the candidates after we realised that she had transferred her vote. We were afraid she wouldn't be allowed to make it to the Nomination Court. However, we sought verification from Zec (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) who then told us that she could take part in the election as they opened the transfer of candidates," explained Mathuthu.

Zhou will be battling it out with Cdes Maidei Mpala and Delight Ngwenya. Mathuthu said the election would kick off at 9AM and the result is expected by 12noon. She emphasised that the final decision regarding those who will represent the party in the June polls would be made by the Politburo.

Rtd Col Dube and Mlilo's election brings to four the number of candidates who will represent the party in the forthcoming by-elections after Cdes Joseph Tshuma (Mpopoma-Pelandaba) and Godfrey Malaba (Pumula) sailed through unopposed.

Yesterday's voting went on peacefully in all the three constituencies.
