Dragging Highlanders into Zanu-PF politics condemned

A social commentator has condemned the dragging of Highlanders Football Club into Zanu-PF politics as destructive following the donation of a bus which seems to be much involving Zanu-PF politicians.
Bekezela Fuzwayo said whoever it is that is allowing for this huge Highlanders and Zanu-PF relationship must surely be that person who in Ndebele we describe as having the guts to swallow a marula fruit quite confident of the size of his outlet (oginya iganu ngolomphumelo obanzi).
"Joshua Nkomo undoubtedly the voice of the people who backed Highlanders over years unwillingly joined Zanu-PF and would have dragged all and sundry with him to Zanu-PF including Highlanders but did not for very obvious reasons," he said. "This person who has allowed Highlanders to be so into Zanu-PF that for the first time in its 89 years that special Bosso emblem is put side by side with the Zanu-PF emblem and referred to as "us" and "together" sure has the guts of a lion which Joshua Nkomo himself didn't have. Even the ZAPU emblem never got a chance to be so officially published alongside the Highlanders emblem"
He said he is shocked that Highlanders is being dragged into all this for only $25 000.
"If there was that dire need for the money certainly we the owners of the team would not have minded paying an extra $1 each in one game against Dynamos and raised that $25 000 and paid for the bu," he said.
"If the condition of the donation is lobola to wed Highlanders with Zanu-PF please give us a chance to pay back the money and set Bosso free."
Methuseli Moyo said he doubt the association of Highlanders Football Club with Zanu-PF, and in particular Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa - through a joint rally-and-bus handover ceremony has not gone down well with some of us within the Highlanders community and opposition parties.
"The bus was purchased jointly by Bosso and long time benefactor, Retired Col. Tshinga Dube. It is a fact that Col. Dube has always been a Zanu-PF politician who supports and donates to Highlanders, and that has never been a problem. So what is the problem now, one may ask?," he said.
"Simply, the problem is, in my analysis, the involvement of VP Mnangagwa as guest speaker at the planned joint rally and ceremony. I am sure it is the first time that football and politics have been mixed this way at Highlanders."
He said for obvious reasons, VP Mnangagwa can never be a darling of Bosso supporters, and his involvement has clearly caused a public relations fiasco for Bosso, who on the other hand are quite aware of their supporters' stance, while on the other the club leadership feels obliged to let Col. Dube and his party have their way, in view of the sponsorship, and that Zanu-PF is the ruling party and Mnangagwa is VP anywhere.
"Under normal circumstances, it would be an honour for a country's VP to come down and attend a club ceremony, but not at Highlanders, apparently. What I do not agree with is hardline positions taken by some club supporters who have become angry to the extent of saying they will boycott Highlanders' matches, and are calling for others to take a cure," he said.
"My view is that we must appreciate the situation that the club finds itself in. As they say, indlala idlisa amanyala (hunger makes one eat garbage)."
"If we really love our club, which i suppose we do, we must support it at this critical juncture and make it stronger to withstand any compromises."
He said besides, Highlanders, the team that was established in 1926, and has survived all manner of trials and tribulations since then, can not and will not be killed by a few hours' association with VP Mnangagwa, Zanu-PF or anyone else. It is also important to note that people have an option whether to attend the ceremony or not.
"On my part, I will stay away from the ceremony, but never from Highlanders, never. Highlanders is desperate for the bus and Col. Dube and his party are desperate for votes. If you ask me, it is a win-win for Bosso but for Col Dube and his party, anything is possible on June 10, the day of the by-election. Highlanders has nothing to lose here comrades," he said.
