Zanu-PF membership cards have suddenly gone on high demand as hundreds of people battle to gain access to Sherwood Block near Kwekwe, where reports of huge gold deposits have triggered a "gold rush", NewsDay reported.

Zanu-PF has, through its Midlands provincial security officer Owen "Mudha" Ncube - who is said to be a "runner" for a Zanu-PF politburo member - claimed it had taken over the lucrative mining claim.

The party told supporters only those with Zanu-PF party membership cards, currently selling for $1 each and known within party structures, would be allowed into the "gold fields" once the green light was given.

A Zanu-PF insider told NewsDay yesterday 3 500 party cards had been sold in the past two days and demand was growing.

Long queues of gold seekers are now the order of the day at the Zanu PF district office in Kwekwe as people jostle to purchase the party cards after news of the gold deposits broke.

In Mbizo 18, on Tuesday night over 670 housewives had reportedly given their names to party activists who promised to forward them to Zanu PF district coordinating committee chairman Jairos Mapenduka.

The list which carries names, identity numbers, home addresses and party card numbers, will be used as a register to screen people for entry into Sherwood Block.
