President Robert Mugabe last week stunned senior Zanu-PF officials in a private briefing before addressing thousands of supporters at a rally in Marondera when he tacitly endorsed Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi to succeed him with words when he said when the sun sets, it shall rise from Mashonaland East and Sekeramayi comes from the province.
This comes amid a heated debate within Zanu-PF as to who is senior in terms of history between VP Emmerson Mnangagwa and Sydney Sekeramayi.
Meanwhile, National People's Party leader Joice Mujuru has claimed her late husband Solomon wanted Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi to be appointed VP ahead of her, contrary to long held views that the former army general masterminded meteoric rise in Zanu-PF and government.
Instead Mujuru said it was First Lady Grace Mugabe who orchestrated her rise to become the country's first female VP before the benefactor authored her downfall.
