Dear Mr Dziruni
Thank you for your letter of 15 November 2011 addressed to the Rt Hon. William Hague MP. I work in the Zimbabwe Unit of Foreign and Commonwealth Office and has been asked to reply.
Your letter asks for the British Government support for the immediate release of Solomon Madzore (MDC-T) Movement for Democratic Change Youth President in Zimbabwe.
Please be assured wee too are deeply concerned and condemn the continuing politically inspired violence and intimidation taking place in Zimbabwe, which include the arrest and ill-treatment of Ministers, MDC MPs ,Civil Society activists and the Christians in Harare and Manicaland. We are aware of the case of Mr Madzore but as I am sure you understand the UK has no locus to intercede in another country's legal process and given the complex historical relationship between the UK and Zimbabwe any loud public condemnation by the UK may have a counterproductive impact.
However, Zimbabwe is aware that the eyes of the International Community are watching them. British diplomatic attend many court cases and monitor human rights violations .We remain concerned about repressive legislation and limited media freedom which affect all Zimbabweans. We call regularly, both bilaterally and in partnership with other EU Member State, for an end to all such abuses and the restoration of internationally accepted human rights standards in Zimbabwe. We spoke and raised our concerns at the UN Human Rights Council on 10 October where the Government of Zimbabwe's human rights record was reviewed under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.
We want to do all we can to support the aspiration of the Zimbabwean people for a more democratic , stable and prosperous Zimbabwe. We continue to believe the inclusive Government and the Global Political Agreement is the best way give the people of Zimbabwe a chance to chose their leaders ,achieve a peaceful transition , and return stability to the country.
For this reason it is vital that election, when held, be conducted in a manner that allows Zimbabwean to express their opinions through properly conducted election without fear of violence or intimidation. We are working with the international and regional community to achieve this and avoid a repeat of the violence that marred the 2008 election
Yours Ever
