Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has been handed an two year extension to his contract on Thursday a day after both Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his Deputy Arthur Mutambara claimed that Chihuri was only acting, pending further consultations.
His contract expired last week Thursday and now he will continue as Zimbabwe top cop till 2014.
Chihuri's contract has been extended a record 14th time since he was appointed as police boss since 1994.
Tsvangirai and Mutambara were speaking after a meeting President Robert Mugabe Wednesday to discuss the dispute over Chihuri and various other issues still dividing the coalition partners.
The shock announcement came through a statement aired on state controlled ZBC Thursday night quoting Mugabe's spokesperson George Charamba.
"When CG Chihuri's term of office expired, President Mugabe solicited the views of the necessary commission as provided for in the Constitution," he said.
Charamba added "Decision on Chihuri's career was due, the President, as dictated by the Constitution, solicited the Police Services Commission, which tendered their recommendations in writing through the Chief Secretary to the Presidency and Cabinet.
"It is that opinion, which guided the President in arriving at a decision. It is on that basis that the President extended the (Police) Commissioner-General's term of office to 2014."
Chihuri is seen as fierce Mugabe loyalist and is accused of making it difficult for the veteran ruler's opponents to hold rallies in the run-up to elections. His first contract expired in 1997.
Mugabe also extended the terms of office of Zimbabwe Defence Forces chief, General Constantine Chiwenga, Zimbabwe National Army Commander Lieutenant General Philip Valerio Sibanda, Air Marshal Perrance Shiri and the Commissioner of Prisons Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi.
