The MDC has said the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe has come as an early Christmas for Zimbabweans who had suffered for a long time under his regime that failed to revive the economy.
"MDC joins the rest of the country and the world in celebrating the end of Robert Gabriel Mugabe's 37 year despotic and dictatorial rule. He further extend our gratitude to Zimbabweans from all walks of life for exercising unity, peace and restraint in the final push to remove Mugabe. To us, Mugabe's exit comes as an early Christmas gift which marks a milestone in the democcratisation struggle which started in 1999. We welcome the fall of a despot whose tenure and legacy is characterized by corruption, plunder, economic mismanagement and killings," he said.
"Our wish is that this development also marks a turnaround in the country's imploding socio-economic situation. We also hope that the next step will be the formation of an inclusive transitional government that will swiftly move to ameliorate the current conditions of the people and pave way for a credible free and fair election."
"Lest we sleep in the bliss of Mugabe's exit celebration, it should be noted that the demise of a dictator does not entail the halt of the democratic struggle which we set out. The revolutionary struggle will only accomplish its mission after the whole system and pillars of dictatorship have been done away with. People must continue to register to vote."
