National People's Party official Obert Mundevere has said his party is happy that one of the Africa dictators Robert Mugabe is now out of power but questioned as to whether that is the only thing which Zimbabweans want to achieve.
The remarks come after Mugabe resigned last week as President after pressure from the military, citizens and his Zanu PF party members.
"Is This Freedom? Are we free Yet? Recent events in Zimbabwe have been so encouraging and as NPP we are happy that one of Africa's dictators has gone. We are happy that hope has become so viral to the people of Zimbabwe. However we call upon the people to make no mistake at all. In 1980 we made the mistake of hero worshipping Robert Mugabe but decades down the line we started regretting. By then he had reinforced his power by lacerating our constitution and introducing draconian laws to safeguard his personal interests," he said.
"At this juncture as Zimbabwe let's not forget that the same laws and mechanisms that oppressed us have not yet been disbanded. What has only changed is the man leading the implementation of those laws. The new president has not yet done anything but lets remain vigilant."
He said these might be the tell tell signs of his eagerness to continue with the same old system: The use of police brutality to squash protests, Victimization and abduction of political activists, Lack of electoral reforms, Biased reporting on the public media ie ZTV, Use of violent and hate speech, Use of traditional leaders to frog march rural populace to vote for ZANU PF, Failure to bring to book corrupt officials, Forging ahead with the use of bond notes despite public complains, Failure to start truth and reconciliation programmes and the continuation of police roadblocks to robe motorists in broad day light.
"We are not judging the new president before he has even started but we need to be very careful. As Zimbabweans we know what we want and it was so disheartening to hear that when we couldn't get cash from banks, G40 official were staffing millions in their bedrooms. The new government can still do the same. In a democracy as citizens we should be allowed to ask our president and the government to be accountable. One way to do so is to protest," he said.
"We want employment, development, grants for university education, medication in hospitals, good roads and many other things but these won't materialise if the government is corrupt. ED Mnangwagwa have got the chance to prove to the people of Zimbabwe that really this which has befallen us is real freedom. Like what Marley sang on the even of 18 April 1980, soon we will see whether President Mnangwagwa is a true revolutionary. We await confirmation as to whether we are free at last."
He said Zimbabwe should be a multi party democracy and as NPP they are always there for the people.
"We do not use people to rubber stamp our selfish agendas. We stand by the people and for the people," he said.
