The MDC led by Welshman Ncube has said former President Robert Mugabe never in his rule used peace as a means of running the country but survived through violence.

"On a correct historical analysis, it is hard to perceive what Mugabe ever did, with the support of the people, successfully, without violence and without causing undue suffering," said the party in a statement.

"Yes people tend to emphasize the first three or four five years of his government citing the expansion of education and that of the health sector, which was done by the way, through the funding of Imperialists who supported the national budget, education and health sectors."

The MDC said however, immediately thereafter, he conducted the Gukurahundi which claimed more lives than those lost during the liberation struggle.

"After that he engaged in a vicious campaign against former Rhodesians and white commercial farmers in the land grabbing programme which was followed by Murambatsvina and then of course the massive corruption that has degraded our national economy," MDC said.

"Even the purported black empowerment and indigenisation have been undermined by the levels of corruption and mismanagement that maimed his government. In approximately fifty-five years, the Rhodesians built cities, railway lines, roads and a whole lot of the infrastructure we see today. Mugabe in 37 years failed to expand those cities, let alone maintain the infrastructure he had inherited from the minority rule."

The party said parastatals are a rot, industries have closed down and roads are a menace to human life.

"Killings, political violence, oppression, repression, corruption, poverty, incompetence and uncostitunalism make up the summary of Mugabe's legacy. It is that kind of legacy which we hope the just inaugurated President, Emerson Munangagwa will restrain from maintaining. We also hope that an environment for a credible free and fair election is going to be created as he has already committed that next year's elections will be held as scheduled," said the party.
