No Central Committee election ahead of congress

THE ruling Zanu-PF will not hold elections for its Central Committee members in all the 10 provinces ahead of the Extra-Ordinary Congress in Harare next week.
Zanu-PF Secretary for Information and Publicity Ambassador Simon Khaya-Moyo said the current Central Committee members will constitute delegates to the Extra-Ordinary Congress. He said the elections would not be held due to limited time left before the Congress kicks off.
"We only have two weeks before the congress so we can't hold elections. There is no time. The current Central Committee members will constitute delegates to the Congress," he said.
Khaya Moyo said preparations for the Congress were progressing well and the party was ready to host the event. The party has also instructed against the wilful purging of party members at all levels warning that drastic measures would be taken against those found wanting.
Khaya Moyo said the resolution by the Central Committee on 19 November to reinstate all members who were either suspended or expelled ahead of the 2014 National People's Congress will be ratified by this year's Extraordinary Congress. He said official communication would be made after the Extra-Ordinary Congress.
"The party will not hesitate to descend heavily on members who will fail to heed this instruction. Party members must stop allocating themselves positions forthwith, until official communication has been made after the Extraordinary Congress," he said. Zanu-PF has since cut its budget for the Extra-Ordinary Congress to $1 million from the initial $8 million that had been proposed. Only 6 000 delegates, from an initial 16 000 will be eligible to attend the three- day event which had previously been scheduled to run for six days.
Each district is expected to send one representative to the congress. The congress will be held at Robert Mugabe Square in Harare.
