Xi congratulates Mnangagwa

Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa on his election as Zimbabwean president.
In a congratulatory message dated Sunday, President Xi expressed hope that the people and government of Zimbabwe will record more achievements in national development under Mnangagwa's leadership.
The Chinese leader said he expects to meet President-elect Mnangagwa again and exchange ideas on China-Zimbabwe ties at the summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing in September this year.
Xi said he hopes the meeting with Mnangagwa in Beijing could push forward the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation between the two countries and bring more benefits to the two nations and peoples.
In April this Mnangagwa, then incumbent Zimbabwean president, paid a 5-day state visit to China during which he met with President Xi and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
Various deals were clinched during the visit, including the US$1.5 billion Hwange Thermal Power Station Expansion Project and the $153 million Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport expansion project, amongst others.
According to results announced by the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission, President-elect Mnangagwa won the presidential election on July 30 after gaining 50.8 percent of the vote, with his closest rival Nelson Chamisa getting 44.3 percent.
