Newly-appointed Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Ezra Chadzamira has called for unity in the province, saying there was need to end "political dogfights" and focus on development.
Addressing hundreds of people, including senior Zanu-PF leaders and supporters on Monday during a ceremony to officially welcome him in the wake of his new appointment, Chadzamira said the country was on an irreversible growth trajectory under the stewardship of President Mnangagwa.
He said MDC-Alliance and other detractors should accept reality that President Mnangagwa was the duly-elected Head of State and Government. He said the opposition should not derail efforts to rebuild the economy by refusing to accept the reality of election defeat in the just-ended harmonised elections.
"My main focus will be to promote socio-economic development in this great province. We are going to relegate politics to the periphery and work to build the economy of our province. We have the resources and we must work in unison for the development of our province.
"This is not the time for any more politicking, we need to join hands and grow the economy of our province irrespective of political affiliation, colour, race or creed," said Chadzamira.
He called on people in the province to take advantage of the impending devolution of power by central Government to turn Masvingo into an economic powerhouse.
Chadzamira said Masvingo could leverage on its high dam density to be Zimbabwe's breadbasket through irrigation. He castigated MDC-Alliance leader Mr Nelson Chamisa for continuing to "hallucinate" that he will lead instead of President Mnangagwa, who was voted into office in the July 30 poll.
"I have a simple message for him (Mr Chamisa), he must not waste time fighting President Mnangagwa because the rest of the nation is focused on economically developing the nation," said Chadzamira.
He, however, applauded the new MDC-Alliance mayor Advocate Collins Maboke for showing political maturity by attending Chadzamira's welcome ceremony.
"We are Zanu-PF and he (Advocate Maboke) is MDC-Alliance, but he has shown us that he can work with everyone. We, therefore, kindly request Advocate Maboke to teach his superior (Mr) Chamisa what is expected of a national leader.
"He is wasting his time fighting President Mnangagwa while everyone should be busy developing the nation."
Chadzamira said the province stood ready to tap into the knowledge and expertise of technocrats in mining, agriculture and tourism among other sectors, which have potential to drive Masvingo's economy. He blasted lazy civil servants who spend most of their time in offices instead of pushing the province's development agenda.
"The new Government under President Mnangagwa does not condone dereliction of duty by civil servants.
"We need people who work hard so that we meet our development targets as we seek to make Zimbabwe a middle-income economy by 2030," he said.
In his address, Chiefs Council president Senator Fortune Charumbira said Chadzamira deserved to be Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister and hailed President Mnangagwa for the move.
"Chadzamira is the rightful person to be in his new post because of his personal attributes namely bravery, hard work and being a team player," he said.
Senator Charumbira said Chadzamira was good leader compared to the former Minister of State for the province, Dr Paul Chimedza, whom he described as an embarrassment to the province because of his divisive nature and political intolerance.
Dr Chimedza entered the history books last year as the shortest-serving Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, lasting only less than a month before he was relieved of his duties following the advent of the new dispensation led by President Mnangagwa.
Zanu-PF Politburo member Lovemore Matuke, in his address, called on the people of Masvingo to close ranks and rally behind Chadzamira's leadership to enable the new Provincial Affairs Minister to steer the province forward economically.
The colourful ceremony was attended by service chiefs, traditional leaders, war veterans and ruling party structures from all corners of Masvingo Province.
