Chamisa became MDC leader after the death of founding party president Morgan Tsvangirai died in February in February 2018.

A few months after becoming MDC president, Chamisa contested the Presidential election where he lost narrowly in controversial circumstances to ZANU PF's Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Chamisa became so popular that at one point ZANU PF was mulling plans to raise the minimum presidential age limit in order to bar him from contesting the next two elections.
