MDC Youth Assembly has come to the defence of the underfire MDC President Nelson Chamisa who is facing an urgent court challenge over his stay at the helm of the party for over a year.
The defence comes after an MDC party pressure group calling itself ‘In Defense of Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy' (DTML) said Chamisa's term of office as interim president has expired and he should stop representing the opposition and pave way for an extra-ordinary congress to appoint a new president as stipulated by the MDC constitution.
"President Chamisa is executing his mandate with distinction. We will not allow some old deranged men who daydream of taking our struggle backwards to prevail over good." Youth Assembly Secretary General Lovemore Chinoputsa said. "The correct position remains that the National Council in its wisdom confirmed Advocate Chamisa as the substantive President of the party and he shall remain so until Congress. At Congress, we are going to reaffirm our support for President Chamisa( by voting for him) on the basis of the good work he has done and continues to do."
Chinoputsa said Chamisa is the best leader that MDC has at the moment and as the Youth Assembly they will not sit back and allow some individuals disturb the peace in the party.
"He is our best foot forward and truth be told no-one in the party right now can carry the task in the manner and form he has been doing. Our view is that any defence of President Tsvangirai's legacy involves respecting the collective decision that was made to have Advocate Chamisa lead us. The membership, supporters and the leadership are all happy with the status quo so we will not sit back and allow people that voluntarily left the organisation to disturb our peace."
