MDC Deputy Treasurer and Member of Parliament for Kuwadzana East Chalton Hwende has been remanded in custody to 20 March 2019.
He is being charged for plotting to overthrow a constitutionally elected government. If found guilty he may be sentenced to 20 years in prison without the option of a fine.
His lawyer Harrison Nkomo is reportedly trying to apply for the urgent filing of bail papers at the High Court.
Nkomo told the court that he is questioning the legality of the arrest. Hwende was arrested as soon as the plane touched down inside the aeroplane onboard flight SW411
Hwende was not allowed to present himself to immigration and his lawyer Nkomo told the court that therefore he is legally not in the country. He was arrested onboard before disembarking flight SW411 from Windhoek to Harare
The police took his passport as they arrested him onboard before disembarking the Air Namibia airplane it touched down in Harare.
Hwende joins a list of MDC MPs who have been arrested over the January 14 violent protests.
