Despite the formation of the unity government in Zimbabwe political violence continues in most parts of the country.

The two MDC formations accused Zanu-PF and the security forces of intensifying a campaign of violence and intimidation against their party members, in advance of elections the former ruling party want this year.

violence and human rights abuses have accompanied every major election in Zimbabwe past recent years.

The southern African country witnessed some of its worst ever political violence during the run up to a second round presidential election in June 2008 that was being held after MDC-T leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai defeated President Robert Mugabe in the first round ballot but without the required number of votes to avoid a second round run-off poll.
