China to build houses for Cyclone Idai victims

Government has announced that Chinese companies have pledged to build houses for the victims of Cyclone Idai who lost their properties during the tragedy that struck the country in March.

During a post-cabinet briefing on Tuesday government said it is grateful to the People's Republic of China which has tasked six Chinese companies operating in the country to undertake the repair of roads, drill boreholes, rehabilitate power infrastructure, provide mobile hospitals, build houses and communication networks in the Cyclone-affected areas.

The companies are said to be using their own resources which shall be reimbursed by the Chinese Government.

Giving  a further update on Cyclone Idai government said excavations for ablution facilities have been completed at nine schools while significant quantities of building materials have already been moved to strategic sites.

Government through the Department of Roads has contacted private companies to carry out permanent reconstruction of affected bridges and roads.

Cyclone Idai which struck Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi was declared by United Nations as the worst climate related disaster to occur in Southern Africa.
