Foreign Affairs Minister, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi has paid tribute to China for spearheading economic growth in Africa.
Mumbengegwi was speaking at the 5th Ministerial conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in the Chinese capital, Beijing, yesterday.
He said China has played an important role in the development of sectors such as energy, mining, health, agriculture, transport and communications on the continent.
Minister Mumbengegwi said: "A combination of Africa's abundant resources and China's fast pace growth rate and its need for these resources is a recipe for a readymade and dynamic win-win partnership between China and Africa."
Mumbengegwi expressed gratitude to China for the support and cooperation the Asian country has rendered to Zimbabwe at various international fora.
"My country, Zimbabwe, has been under illegal western sanctions since 2000. In 2008, China had to cast her veto in the United Nations Security Council to save Zimbabwe from destructive and crippling Chapter VII sanctions sponsored by western countries in the Security Council. Zimbabwe shall forever be grateful to China," said Mumbengegwi.
He said China and Africa have strengthened dialogue and cooperation in the field of climate change through consultation at United Nations Climate Change Conferences.
Mumbengegwi called on developed countries to cut gas emissions and give support for mitigation measures to countries affected by climate change.
Minister Mumbengegwi said Africa has contributed the least but has suffered the most from the effects of climate change, adding that Zimbabwe has not been spared.
"In my country, Zimbabwe, in recent years, climate change has wrecked havoc on our economy whose mainstay is agriculture," he said.
Mumbengegwi said Zimbabwe supports the adoption of the Beijing Declaration of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation Beijing Action Plan 2013-2015.
The Action Plan is meant to further enhance cooperation between China and the continent.
The conference is running under the theme, "Build on Past Achievements and Open Up New Prospects For The New Type Of China-Africa Strategic Partnership".
