Harare:  The party's national executive met in Harare today to receive the draft constitution from the party's representatives at Copac led by co-chair Hon Edward Mkhosi and the management committee comprising of the Secretary General and the Deputy Secretary General Hon Priscilla Misihairabwi Mushonga and Moses Mzila Ndlove respectively.

After a careful study of the Copac report and the draft clause by clause the party formally adopted and endorsed the draft constitution.

Addressing the press after the national executive meeting the MDC President Welshman Ncube said that the party has accepted that the draft as a "representation of significant progress in the democratic struggle" under the present circumstances although it is an imperfect document. It should then be taken to the second stakeholder's conference and all other stages that will lead to the referendum.

" as a party we have accepted the draft as the only possible compromise although its imperfect in some places, it is a constitution crafted under the tripartite government, where we had to give and take. However as party we believe there are things that we could have changed had we written the constitution as the only party in government." The President said.

He went on to say that as party the MDC will not allow  the creation of any forum that will seek to re-negotiate the constitution, he said that all those that were fundamentally opposed to the constitution draft to campaign for a no vote.

" we would like to make it clear that we will not allow any other forum or creation of a new one be it leaders of political parties, so called principals or any other. We say that politicians have done their party for the last three years its time that the people be given a chance to decide.

President Ncube went on to say that there will be chances in future to deal with the imperfect parts of the constitution.

" they will be future struggles or opportunities to relook at the constitution and those remain open but for now let's take the draft to the people those that are fundamentally opposed they are free to campaign for a no vote,' he said.
