Joshua Nkomo's chief bodyguard Kenneth Msiphuna Ncube has died. He was 72.
Ncube died last week at his residence, Plot 84 Vincent Road, Worringham, Bulawayo.
He was born at Masase Mission in 1939.
Ncube's body left for Mberengwa on Saturday. He will be buried today at his rural home near Masase Mission in Mberengwa.
Ncube was Nkomo's chief bodyguard and driver during the Gukurahundi period, and was heavily involved in organising the very protective and elusive security system that spared Nkomo from both death and jail from the Zanu government.
ZAPU spokesman Methuseli Moyo said: "The fact that Ncube was made chief bodyguard and driver to Father Zimbabwe during the war and during Gukurahundi speaks volumes about what kind of a man he was. We will not say more, except to say that such a man deserved to have his mane among the so-called national heroes of our motherland, more so if one Winston Changara made it to the exclusive list of heroes interred at the national shrine. If Changara was made national hero for being a bodyguard to Mugabe, Ncube deserved some sort of status, if not the same, for being bodyguard to the undisputed Father Zimbabwe that the late Nkomo was".
"We take comfort in knowing that Ncube's soul and remains are resting peacefully after his family, friends and Zapu respected his wish never to be buried anywhere near the people who wanted Nkomo and Zapu dead. May his soul rest in eternal peace," he added.
Moyo said the death of Ncube and subsequent lack of interest in his case is yet another indictment on those who continue to masquerade as representatives of Zapu and Zipra, and by implication representatives of the people of Matabeleland in Zanu-PF.
"Zapu take this opportunity to thank Ncube's family and relatives, friends, fellow freedom fighters and party members and supporters who worked together to ensure that this real gallant son of the soil got a decent send-off under the circumstances. He is survived by wife Sarah, two children and seven grandchildren," he said.
