TWO medical doctors have concluded that MDC Alliance Member of Parliament for Harare West Joana Mamombe has psychological problems and recommended that she be treated and get help from a psychologist.

This emerged in court yesterday when magistrate Bianca Makwande said she had received three medical reports on her mental status. Of the three medical affidavits, only one doctor concluded that Mamombe was perfect and was able to comprehend things having interacted with her.

Her lawyer, Alec Muchadehama, said they would go for the recommendations by the two doctors and sought to have her trial deferred to allow her to get treatment.

Mamombe is facing allegations of faking abduction together with her MDC Alliance counterparts Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marowa.

State counsel Michael Reza said they would consider separating the trial and proposed that the matter be deferred to November 16. Mamombe was recently remanded into custody for her to be mentally examined after
questions were raised over her mental capacity.

She was only released from custody after the intervention of the High Court having been there for two weeks.

The court will today give a ruling on how the matter will proceed in terms of the law.

Allegations are that on May 13 at around 12.30pm, the three — together with other MDC Alliance youths — gathered at Choppies Supermarket in Warren Park 1 and staged a demonstration against the recalling of their MPs from Parliament and the alleged misuse of funds for Covid-19 pandemic by the government.

After the demonstration, the State alleges they went on to fake that they had been abducted. The alleged false kidnapping statements are said to have attracted adverse comments locally and internationally, derailing the country's economic recovery efforts.
