Botswana President Seretse Ian Khama has challenged South African president Jacob Zuma to work tirelessly to solve the dispute between Zimbabwe's ruling parties over the new constitution to ensure the country holds credible elections soon.
"Sadc would be credited if Zimbabwe holds free and fair elections. Nothing would be as good as seeing credible elections being held in Zimbabwe," said Khama speaking on SABC television channel on Wednesday.
Zuma and Khama oversaw the signing of landmark agreements between the two countries.
Addressing a business luncheon, Zuma paid tribute to Botswana's sacrifices in support of the struggle against apartheid. "You must not take note of people who may have not taken the trouble to know the history of Botswana and South Africa, when they make public statements and utterances that are inappropriate," says Zuma.
The two leaders also reflected on developments globally and in the SADC region. "I hope that your efforts as well as those of the SADC community will be rewarded with the holding of free and fair elections. Nothing other than free and fair elections will be acceptable to the people of Zimbabwe and all of us in the international community," said Khama.
Zuma will conclude his visit tomorrow touring entry points formerly used by South African exiles going for military training.
