National census final mop-up

ENUMERATORS in the national census are expected to visit areas where people were not counted during the official counting days, Population Census director Mr Washington Mapeta has said.

Mr Mapeta said enumerators and supervisors who took part in the 12-day exercise would be paid part of the money while Government mobilises resources to pay outstanding funds.

He said the move to revisit other areas followed complaints that some people had not been counted.

Mr Mapeta said the mop-up exercise would also give validity to the final results.

"We are checking all those reports and for the purposes of making the whole process credible, enumerators will visit areas where people are said to have been left out. It is something we are looking at seriously because we know that there are single households where occupants might not have been there during the official days," he said.

This is in addition to the mop-up exercise Zimstat carried out immediately after the census.

The census ran from August 17 to 27.

There were reports that some residents in Bulawayo, Masvingo and Harare were not counted.

Justice and Legal Affairs Deputy Minister Obert Gutu has threatened to sue Zimstat for leaving out some households in his ward.
