The United Nations says it will need to dispatch an assessment mission to Zimbabwe to determine how best the international body can financially support the country's referendum and electoral processes.
A statement issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative in Harare, Mr Alain Noudehou, says resource mobilisation efforts by the world body for the country's referendum and elections will be guided by the outcome of the assessment mission.
Mr Noudehou's statement to the media comes 12 days after Zimbabwe submitted a request for assistance in mobilising funds for the two processes to the local UN coordinator and UNDP local representative.
Mr Noudehou said according to UN Electoral Support, Zimbabwe's request was forwarded to the UN focal point on electoral assistance at the UN headquarters.
The UN focal point has commended government for the progress it has made in the constitution making process and has since reviewed the request and responded to government.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe government has since set up a three member cabinet committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara to spearhead a local fundraising initiative from the private sector for the constitutional referendum and harmonised elections.
The funds raised from the UNDP will supplement the local private initiative.
Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Finance Minister Tendai Biti are part of the cabinet fundraising team.
