'Zanu-PF, MDCs are taking Zimbabweans for a ride'

MAVAMBO/KUSILE/DAWN (MKD) leader Simba Makoni yesterday said Zanu-PF and the MDCs were taking Zimbabweans for a ride by pretending that the national crisis the country has faced prompted need for a new constitution.
He said the MKD party was encouraging Zimbabweans to vote NO for the draft tomorrow, saying: "GPA (The Global Political Agreement) and Copac conspired to put our people on their side by pretending their problems will be solved by a new constitution and yet our problems arise from the cruelty, arrogance and impunity of political leaders.
"The country needs a new constitution, but even before the new constitution has come into force the inclusive government and Copac had breached Article 7 and rushed to call for a referendum barely two weeks after publication of the draft - and it was in one language when the document should be produced in all 16 languages."
Makoni said the draft discriminated against men on the removal of the death sentence for women only.
He also attacked the idea of having two Houses of Parliament, saying only 150 MPs would suffice while a second vice-president was also not necessary for the country.
"I think we are the only country in the world to put the prison services under security services and we understand it to be militarisation of civil servants. We are worried that there is no commission for the central intelligence service and that is an oversight as it seems it was deliberate so that they maintain their impunity," Makoni said.
