An elderly man who is reportedly a Senior Zanu-PF official in Mhondoro narrowly escaped jail after he faked his daughter's death and claimed US$3,000 from ZB Funeral Assurance.
Sekuru Aggrey Chiweshe (63), was convicted of fraud after he misrepresented that his daughter (name withheld for she is a minor) had died. The elderly man, father of eight, and grandfather of many, reportedly went on to obtain a death certificate for his beloved daughter before allegedly heading to ZB Bank where he claimed US$3,000.
Sekuru Chiweshe is said to have approached ZB Bank Rotten Row branch in Harare where he reportedly made an application for funeral assistance from the Bank's Funeral Assurance department. To 'validate' his application, the 63-year-old man allegedly submitted a death certificate of his 12-year-old daughter together with his application for US$3,000.
The seemingly cash-strapped Sekuru Chiweshe reportedly received a staggering US$3,000 funeral assurance fund after verbally 'killing' his beloved daughter, who is still going to school in Mhondoro, by claiming to the Bank that she had died on 5 February.
ZB Bank, after granting the Zanu-PF official for Mhondoro the US$3,000, a seemingly suspicious constable from the bank later visited Chiweshe to his Chiweshe village under Chief Mashayamombe in Mhondoro, near Mubaira Growth Point where he met the young girl who was claimed to have died.
The court heard Crispen Mavengano heard that the bank official discovered that the girl is alive and is still in school. The Bank official reportedly later made a police report leading to the elderly man's arrest.
Chiweshe, who is a young brother of the village head for Mhondoro's Chiweshe kraal, was slapped with 24-months imprisonment before 12 months were suspended for five years on conditions of good behaviour. The remaining 12 months were set aside on condition that he pays back the money to the bank.
