MDC leader Welshman Ncube yesterday defended his party's position on a proposed election pact with the MDC-T, saying if they did not make a stand, Zimbabwe would be replacing a dictator with another one.
Ncube was responding to a post on micro blogging site Twitter by Sokwanele, a non-governmental organisation, that was commenting on reports accusing the MDC leader of being a stumbling block to unity talks.
"A stinging assessment of Welshman Ncube on any talks of a unity pact," posted the organisation with Tatenda ZW14 adding, "at the expense of poor Zimboz (Zimbabweans), shame. Is this really the time to serve selfish egos? God help Zimbabwe."
Ncube responded saying: "If we didn't make a stand, Zimbabweans would only replace a dictator with another. That helps no one."
Sokwanele then posted, "How does your strategy (saying no to a unity agreement) ensure that another dictator won't come to power?
Ncube responded: "Our strategy has been serious and sincere attempts at healing the rift between the MDC formations, only that failed because the MDC-T snubbed it.
"(It failed) because of continued undermining of democratic ideals by MDC-T.
"We provided leadership towards a democratic Zimbabwe, by ourselves committing to democratic behaviour, providing alternative leadership upon which Zimbabweans can achieve real change and freedoms for all."
The MDC leader said his party wanted to provide a basis on principle on which real unity can be achieved among democratic forces in the future.
