UPHOLDING religious beliefs of not partaking in traditional ceremonies saw a Chipinge octogenarian (84) committing suicide.

Police confirmed that Wilbert Makuyana (84) of Takunda Village in Chief Musikavanhu's area was found hanging from a tree on April 16.

It is alleged that Makuyana, who is a member of an apostolic sect and his sons were at loggerheads over evil spirits that were allegedly haunting the family.

David Makuyana, the deceased's son reportedly asked his father to accompany him to a local traditional healer who had demanded to see Wilbert before he could cleanse them.

Chipinge District police spokesperson, Sergeant Clothing Ncube, said Wilbert, however, did not bow down to David's requests, saying he was a devoted Christian who disdained traditional ceremonies.

Sgt Ncube said David kept on nagging Wilbert to accompany him to the traditional healer for the cleansing ceremony. Wilbert allegedly summoned his young brother, Obert Makuyana (59), to resolve the issue.

"On April 16, Makuyana left Obert sleeping in a hut where the two had put up for the night. Unbeknown to Obert, his brother had sneaked out to end his life.

"The following morning, Obert and other family members conducted a search and found Wilbert's body hanging from a Mopani Tree in a nearby bush," said Sgt Ncube.

His body was conferred to St Peter's Mission Hospital for post mortem. Investigations are in progress and no foul play is suspected.
